Sergeant Paul Cole was the first officer to die in the line of duty at
the Ingham County Sheriff's Office.
Sergeant Cole began his career at the Ingham County Sheriff's Office
in October 1977. In the years following he held a variety of positions,
including assignment to the canine unit that he would eventually supervise.
On September 2, 1995, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
On October 6, 1996, while en route to the scene of a domestic situation
where a weapon was involved, a herd of deer ran into his path. Witnesses
stated he swerved to miss the deer and lost control of his vehicle. He struck
a tree at a high rate of speed and died instantly.
Sergeant Cole is survived by his wife and three children.
