The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Lansing Police Department, Eaton County Sheriff’s Office and Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, maintains an underwater dive rescue and recovery team. These trained individuals provide water rescue and recovery for all of Ingham, Eaton and Clinton County as well as within the City of Lansing. The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office contributes seven divers to the 17 member team, and the Regional Team is referred to as the Capitol Area Dive Team. All the members of the team are Full-Time Sworn Officers and Deputies and are available for rescue or recovery 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Dive Team is the only unit capable of sub-surface search, rescue and recovery within the Tri-County Area, and they are often called upon to assist local Fire Departments on surface rescues. The Capital Area Dive Team also provides security and law enforcement at special events in and around local waterways, provides water safety presentations and works closely with the ICSO Marine Division.

Members train on a monthly basis and occasionally combine evidence recovery or searches into their training. Exercises include a variety of rescue and recovery techniques, search patterns and recovery, as well as swift water, river diving and ice diving. Several team members are rated at the Dive master level, the highest level of training attainable, recognized by both the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), or hold advanced diving certification.
